Thanksgiving Travel - Safety Tips

This Thanksgiving, millions of families will pack the car and travel to be with family during the holidays. Thanksgiving travel greatly increases the number of drivers on the road and means we need to be more aware, alert and cautious when traveling over the holiday weekend. AAA projects that 41.9 million travelers will drive at least 50 miles this Thanksgiving - the highest volume of traffic on the road since 2007.

As you travel to visit family for Thanksgiving, here are some straight-forward, easy, travel tips that you can use:

  •   Leave earlier then necessary

o   This will provide you plenty of time to deal with traffic and will leave you less likely to speed, rush, or become anxious.

  •  Wear Your Seat Belt

o   A seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injuries by 45-60 percent (NHTSA), depending on your vehicle

  •  Check you vehicle before getting on the road -

o   Check gas, tire pressure, and windshield fluid

o   Get your lights and breaks checked

o   Clean the windows, headlights, and signal lights

  •   Stay Alert

o   Get plenty of rest before traveling

o   Be on the lookout for distracted or impaired drivers

o   Have a passenger that is able to help navigate and keep a lookout
