1.       Why did you decide to go to law school?

When I was younger, I was drawn to the idea of the courtroom battle, helping people stand up and fight for their rights against the bad guys and impossible odds.  I enlisted in the Marines when I was 17 with the plan of enrolling in the Marine Corps PLC-Law program and becoming a military lawyer.  However, like most people, I found that life can throw your plans off track along the way.  I met my wife when I was going to UNC on the GI Bill, and we had our first son.  After graduating, I needed to support my new family and so law school would have to wait.  I became a police officer, and it didn't take me long to realize that the legal system I had seen in movies and on TV was far from reality.  Later, I got hurt at work and had to fight for compensation for my injuries.  I saw firsthand how the system worked (and didn't work), and how hard it was to navigate the system and have access to the court. I realized then that being a lawyer truly was my calling.  So, with three kids and a very supportive wife, I went to law school so I could be an advocate for people just like me.

2.       How has your previous life experience influenced the way you approach the practice of law?

I believe that it is my prior life experience that makes me a more effective lawyer.  Many attorneys go straight from college to law school, and then right into practice having never done anything else or worked outside of the legal profession.  This can make it hard for them to truly relate to their clients and put themselves in their clients' shoes.  Fortunately, I don't have that problem because I've been right where my clients are.  I can sympathize with what my clients are going through, and that drives me to handle each case like it was my own.

3.       Practicing law can be all-consuming; how do you keep a healthy balance between your professional life and family time?

Representing an individual or a business in a legal matter is an enormous responsibility, and one that I take very seriously. If I don't do my job, it's not just me and my family who pay the price.  The consequences to my client could be far worse, and so I can't just clock out at 5:00 and forget about work until the next morning.  Sometimes that can put a strain on life outside of work, but I never lose sight of the fact that my family is my number one responsibility, just like it is for my clients.  I've been doing this long enough that my family knows that sometimes I'll have to miss a date night, football game, or Boy Scout trip, but they also know that my clients are real people who need help, and they are proud that their husband and father is the one making sure those clients are getting the help they need.  We certainly make it a priority to support each other and spend time together doing the things we love to do as a family, but all of us know that sometimes I might have to step away and handle something that needs to be done.  Bottom line, my family knows that they are the most important thing in my life, but that other people depend on me too.

4.       Why did you decide to join Miller Law Firm?

At Miller Law Firm I get to do what I love, and I get to do it with a team made up of people who love it as much as I do.  I've spent time in larger law firms and in big organizations, and I wanted to be somewhere where the focus was on doing good and not just doing well.  I found it here.  Being a part of a deliberately small, team-oriented firm with a clear focus on being the best at what we do is how I always thought the practice of law should be.  The fact that I get to do it with other lawyers who share my passion for the law and doing good, and who also happen to be some of the best in the business, makes it a dream come true.  I'm very blessed to be able to get up each morning excited to go to work, and to go to bed each night knowing that the work I did that day mattered.  I really couldn't ask for anything more.
